The word Carfour originates from French and should be pronounced ka-foo. It comes from the word CARREFOUR which means junction or crossroads, but the meaning most people relate to it when they think about carfour or carrefour is a world known supermarket chain.

The carrefour supermarket chain opened its first store in 1957 near a crossroads in France by Fournier & Defforey. The store soon grew and other outlets were opened, today it is the second largest shopping mall in the world. Normal Carrefour stores today have evolved into super stores which is now known as Carrefour hypermarkets among many places you will for an example with ease find a carrefour hypermarket in Spain. They are really big and most markets sell everything from groceries to other household or office goods. The concept is based on good low price products which is achieved by making their own brands or so called private label goods. That way Carrefour can sell cheap non branded products or at least not branded with expensive world known names. This concept is the background for their hypermarket business model and probably the most important in the carrefour hypermarket history.

But Carfour has also become a word for a market in general, maybe because of Carrefour, but it is not for certain. The word is used around the world, but the supermarket on the other hand is also known worldwide.

If you search the Internet you will also find Carfour related to cars and autos, simply because it contains “CAR”, car number “four”.

Have you ever heard about the Carrefour American food festival? it was a promotional attempt to feature American groceries in foreign markets, mostly China. The markets in China are growing rapidly and featuring American products here will probably yield very positive results in the future.
